In the Spotlight with Andrew Mellor of Gopher Money
Loan Talk sat down with Andrew Mellor, Operations Manager at master broker Gopher Money, to find out more about the firm’s future plans, escaping to a weekend of fishing and Christopher Walken…
1:You are currently Gopher Money’s Operations Manager – what does your day-to-day role involve?
AM: People are the most important part of my role, so the vast majority of my day is spent ensuring that people are focused and able to fulfil their own role to the best of their ability, and if not, what can I do to change that and help them improve. My current day-to-day role, however, involves a huge amount of recruitment and reviewing processes to ensure we are future-proof for our imminent expansion.
2: After your role at British Gas, what is the most surprising or exciting thing about working in the sec2ured loan industry?
By far the most exciting part of it is working for the company I am at. The culture, drive and ambition of everyone at every level of this company are infectious, so it’s really easy to help facilitate that growth and success of the company in such a competitive industry.
3: If a film was made of your life, who would you choose to play the title role, and why?
Christopher Walken. Superb actor, but also based on the fact that he is very capable of being comedic but also couples it with an air of darkness - a fair portrayal of my life!
4: How are plans for 2013 shaping up at Gopher?
2013 for Gopher is set to be a truly fantastic year, not only with our impending expansion and increased success but also a desire to always do better means that this time next year, who knows where we will be? One thing I can guarantee is that we will be enjoying it.
5: What’s your favourite thing about your job?
It’s a cliché but it’s the people: they are amongst the best I have worked with and for. As stated earlier, their collective ambition is infectious and to meet so many people so proud about the company they work for is refreshing for me.
6: If you could only bring one thing to a desert island, what would it be?
My private jet.
7: In light of recent banking and financial scandals, do you feel that the stereotypical view of the industry can be improved?
Totally. Being new to the industry but also from a heavily regulated insurance background I was aware of some of the stigma surrounding it but confident that my experience could overcome some of these in what we do with our customers. I see it as a challenge and one that will be a pleasure, especially when helping customers see the good in what we do.
8: If you could spend a day in the life of anyone in the world, who would it be?
My four-year-old daughter, Francesca. Conversations with her are guaranteed all-time classics, so I would love to see the world through her eyes for a day!
9: How would you spend your ideal Sunday?
To the uninitiated this will be boring, but trust me when I say there is little else more enjoyable than the escapism of fishing.
10: What changes do you think will affect the secured lending industry most going into the New Year?
I suspect things will pick up a little bit from a lending point of view this year, with funding becoming more accessible to some. I doubt that we’ll see a huge upturn quite yet, but I do know that we’ll be ready for it when this does happen.
