Ecology Building Society has announced the appointment of a new chief operating officer.

Martin Sims joins after more than six years at Co-op Bank, having most recently served as senior manager for mortgages. 

In his new role, Martin will lead Ecology’s sustainable mortgages and savings operations, as well as further developing the building society’s support for community-led housing.

Paul Ellis, CEO of Ecology, said: “I am thrilled to welcome Martin to Ecology.

“His wide-ranging and comprehensive experience will be a major asset to the society.

“This is a critical role as we develop and grow our sustainable lending as well as supporting our savings members.”

Prior to the Co-op Bank, Martin also held positions at Royal Bank of Scotland and HBOS.

His appointment at Ecology follows the retirement of predecessor George Haslem, who had spent six years in the position.

Martin added: “I am delighted to be joining the team at Ecology.

“I am looking forward to playing a key part in the future success and development of the society and to help ensure that we continue to meet the needs of all of our members.”

Ecology was established in 1981 with the aim of helping to finance environmental building renovations and support sustainable development. 

The building society lends only on properties and projects that respect the environment in areas such as residential, buy-to-let and development finance.
